Dr Thomas Cooney

Dr Thomas Cooney is a registrar completing his training in Sport and Exercise Medicine through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians. He is currently in his 3rd year of specialist training.

Originally from Ireland, Tom obtained his medical degree with honours from University College Cork in 2015. After completing his internship he moved to Australia in 2016 where he spent a number of years working in emergency medicine, orthopaedics, intensive care and general medicine before specialising in Sports Medicine. To further his knowledge he completed a Masters of Sports Medicine through the University of Queensland in 2020.

He is currently a club doctor for the Sydney Swans, working across both the VFL and AFL programs. He is also the doctor for the Australian u20 rugby team. He has had previous roles as Chief Medical Officer for the Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League as well as Sydney University rugby club.

Tom enjoys working with people of all ages regardless of their level of physical activity. He has a particular interest in the footballing codes, concussion, as well as the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. When indicated, he can perform ultrasound guided injections of corticosteroid, platelet rich plasma and hyaluronic acid and he is also experienced in the use of extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

Outside of work Tom enjoys running around Centennial Park, playing 5-a-side soccer and exploring Sydney’s food and coffee scene.
