Dr Thomas Cooney

Sport & Exercise Physician

Originally from Ireland, Tom obtained his medical degree with honours from University College Cork in 2015. After completing his internship he moved to Australia in 2016 where he spent a number of years working in emergency medicine, orthopaedics, intensive care and general medicine before specialising in Sports Medicine. To further his knowledge he completed a Masters of Sports Medicine through the University of Queensland in 2020 and completed his specialty training through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) in 2025.

He is currently the head doctor for the Sydney Swans in the AFL and has previously been the doctor for the Australian u20s rugby team, Sydney University Rugby club and the Western Sydney Wanderers football club.

Tom enjoys working with people of all ages regardless of their level of physical activity. He has a particular interest in the footballing codes, concussion, as well as the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. When indicated, he can perform ultrasound guided injections of corticosteroid, platelet rich plasma and hyaluronic acid and he is also experienced in the use of extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

Outside of work Tom enjoys running around Centennial Park, playing 5-a-side soccer and exploring Sydney’s food and coffee scene.
